The Dreamgirls by Tom Eyen & HD Kreiger (1980s), pre-dates the 'jukebox musicals' that became vogue after the success of Mamma Mia.
I still love this musical. Tracks just pop into my head from time to time, and before you know my mind is playing through the whole original soundtrack recording, from the 1980s, visualizing the stage show and everything. I never saw a production of the musical until I watched the film version with Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx. An excellent rendition of the musical.
It still amazes me, though I suppose it shouldn't, that two white Jewish men could have written the musical 'The Dreamgirls'. Tom Eyen & HD Kreiger have such insights into the hearts and minds of black Americans, males and females.
It's revelations like these that makes racism so hard to fathom.
What can be going on in the minds of racists?
Do they seriously believe that black people are not just like they are - just people?
